Don’t Like Tattoos

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I don’t really like tattoos. I know it sounds backwards and that I don’t want people to express themselves, but this is me expressing myself. I’m all for people doing what makes them happy and making statements to the world, but personally I just think they look ugly. Everyone has such beautiful skin, whether that skin is silky smooth or rough and bumpy, it’s all beautiful, and in my opinion shouldn’t be covered up by ink.

Now I’m not saying that the tattoo art itself is ugly, I’ve seen some beautiful designs in my time, I just think printing something on your skin is an injustice to its beauty. Despite all this, I am impressed by tattoo artists. Melbourne has plenty of them, and the majority of them are talented in their own right. I’m sure if they decided to pursue actual art that they’d be very successful. Once again I’m sure I will be ridiculed for saying that tattoos aren’t actual art, but que sera sera.

I am well aware that the opinion I hold is in the minority. I am the only person in my friendship group, and one of the only people in my workplace that doesn’t have a tattoo, so it’s clear that they are very popular. I’m sure they’re popular for a good reason too, I however just can’t get my head around it. A mate of mine can’t stop raving about his latest tattoo. Surfers Paradise, one of my favourite places in Australia, is where he got the tattoo done. We were on a trip together when he got it, so it’s not like I needed to keep hearing about it. But whatever, the man’s proud of it. I guess I can’t begrudge him that. But it’s definitely not the best thing I’ve ever seen… tattoos never are.
